Why does my child forget what I asked halfway through?
How working memory can affect instructions in children with ADHD, and how to move the next step out of memory and into view.

The short answer
Working memory holds information briefly while a child uses it. An instruction can be lost if it contains several steps, competes with noise or thought, or must survive a move into another room. Children with ADHD show working-memory differences on average, but forgetting can also reflect missed attention, unclear language, anxiety, fatigue or learning needs. First check what the child heard and understood. Then reduce the amount they must hold: give one usable step, put the sequence where the action happens, prepare materials and let the child return to the instruction without needing another adult rescue.
- Working memory is the temporary holding and use of information, not the same as long-term memory.
- A child may understand each step but lose the sequence while acting.
- Repeating the whole instruction more loudly can overload the same system again.
- Check attention, hearing, language and understanding before assuming a memory problem.
- Put information at the point of use and allow the child to look back at it.
- Commercial memory training should not replace practical support; evidence for broad transfer is limited.
You ask your child to put their cup in the kitchen, bring down their school bag and find their shoes. They carry the cup away, notice something on the table and return without the bag or shoes. When reminded, they may insist that you never asked.
The instruction may have been present for a few seconds and then lost while the child was trying to act on it. That is different from storing a birthday, fact or familiar route in long-term memory. Understanding the difference helps adults move information to a place where the child can retrieve it.
What working memory does
Working memory holds a small amount of information temporarily while we use it. It is involved when a child remembers the middle of a sentence, follows several steps, keeps a number in mind during a calculation or returns to a task after a brief interruption.
It is not a storage cupboard with a fixed number of shelves. Performance changes with attention, language, familiarity, stress, fatigue and the amount of information already being managed. A child may remember a long sequence in a familiar game and lose two spoken steps during a noisy morning.
A 2020 meta-analysis of 49 studies found poorer verbal working-memory performance on average in children and adolescents with ADHD than comparison groups [3]. This group difference does not mean every child with ADHD has the same difficulty, or that a memory-test result diagnoses ADHD.
The instruction may fail before memory is involved
Before deciding the child forgot, check whether the information arrived in a usable form.
They may have:
- not shifted attention towards the speaker;
- heard only the end of the sentence;
- misunderstood a word;
- agreed automatically without processing;
- been unable to hear over background noise;
- felt anxious about the task;
- lacked the knowledge or skill to do it; or
- become absorbed in another cue immediately afterwards.
Move close enough to be heard, use the child's name without turning it into a warning and pause before the instruction. Ask them to tell or show you the first action. Avoid “What did I just say?” in an accusatory tone. It tests recall under pressure and often begins an argument about listening.
Try:
“I gave you several parts. Which one reached you?”
If none did, repeat only the first usable step.
Choose the moment for the instruction
An accurate instruction can still arrive at an unusable time. Calling several steps from another room while the child is dressing asks them to stop, listen, retain the message and return to the original task. Adding tomorrow's reminder during tonight's argument gives it little chance of surviving.
Give information as close as practical to the point of action. If it concerns later, record it in the system the child will meet later. Pause television or conversation rather than competing with it from a distance. For transitions, give the cue before the current activity reaches a point that is hard to leave.
This does not require a silent house or perfect attention. It means avoiding preventable competition when the instruction matters. If the child must learn to act in busier settings, add that complexity gradually after the sequence works in an easier version.
Several simple steps can create one complex demand
“Get ready for school” may mean choosing clothes, dressing, eating, brushing teeth, finding equipment, checking the weather and leaving at the right time. Each step can be familiar while the sequence remains difficult to hold and organise.
The instruction also has to survive action. Walking upstairs introduces sights, sounds and thoughts that compete with the original plan. An interruption requires the child to retain where they were and resume. If the sequence has no visible trace, one distraction can erase the route back.
Count the hidden jobs before deciding the child is ignoring a simple request. Reduce the sequence or move it out of speech.
Give one step that enters the task
Choose an instruction the child can act on immediately:
- “Put the cup in the sink.”
- “Bring your school bag to the front door.”
- “Open the homework page and read the first question.”
One step does not mean adults must issue every action forever. It gives the child a successful entry point while a visible sequence carries the remaining steps.
Avoid fragmenting a task so far that the child has no sense of purpose. Tell them the overall aim once: “We are getting ready to leave.” Then provide the next action or point to the plan.
Put the sequence at the point of use
A list on the kitchen wall cannot help with a bathroom routine the child forgets upstairs. Place the information where it will be needed.
Useful forms include:
- three words on a card;
- pictures beside the items;
- a checklist attached to the school bag;
- an example of the finished setup;
- materials laid out in the order used; or
- a digital reminder that opens the relevant instruction.
Keep the sequence short enough to scan. “Shoes, bag, water” may work better than a beautifully designed page containing every possible morning action. Remove completed or irrelevant steps when they become visual clutter.

Let the child return without adult rescue
The value of a visible instruction is not only remembering. It allows the child to check again without calling an adult, being corrected or pretending they know.
Teach the return action explicitly:
“If you finish a step and do not know what comes next, look at the card by the door.”
During early practice, point to the card instead of restating the whole sequence. If the child never consults it, check whether it is visible, understandable and placed before the point of drift. A support that depends on the child remembering its existence may need a stronger cue.
Reduce competing load
Instructions are harder to hold when the child is also managing noise, hunger, time pressure, emotional upset or several adults talking. Change what can be changed:
- turn down background audio;
- finish one conversation before beginning another;
- prepare frequently lost materials;
- avoid giving new steps while the child is crossing a busy space;
- allow processing time; and
- separate an emotional discussion from the practical instruction when possible.
This is not creating an unrealistically quiet world. It is choosing which challenge the child needs to manage at that moment.
Use repeat-back as collaboration, not examination
Ask the child to put the instruction into their own words or show the first step. Keep the tone neutral:
“I want to check that I made it clear. What are you doing first?”
If they repeat the words but do not understand, ask them to demonstrate. If they understand but lose the next step during action, use a visible sequence. If the task is familiar and they can follow it in calm conditions, look at what changes during the difficult version.
Older children may prefer writing the instruction themselves, taking a photo of the board or receiving it through the school platform. Agree one reliable source rather than scattering tasks across email, apps, spoken reminders and loose sheets.
Working memory and time can look alike
A child who forgets that an appointment exists may appear to have no sense of time. A child who knows the time but loses the preparation sequence has a different problem. The guide to ADHD and time perception helps separate duration and deadlines from holding the next action in mind.
The difficulties can overlap. A morning plan may need both a visible sequence and a cue for when to begin. Choose the smallest combination that works rather than covering the house in reminders.
Be cautious with memory-training claims
Computer programmes may improve performance on tasks similar to those practised. Families are sometimes promised broad changes in attention, school attainment or behaviour. A meta-analysis of cognitive-training studies found limited evidence that working-memory training transferred to those wider outcomes in children with ADHD [4]. The research has continued to develop, but that result is a reason to be careful with expensive or sweeping claims.
Practical environmental support is not a lesser option. If a written instruction allows the child to complete a routine, it has improved functioning even if an underlying test score has not changed.
Review whether the support transfers responsibility
The aim is not an adult shadowing every action. Track what the child can now do with the information available:
- Did they begin without another spoken reminder?
- Could they find the next step after interruption?
- Did the sequence reduce conflict?
- Was the system quick enough for the real routine?
- Can one adult maintain it without becoming the system themselves?
Reduce prompting when the child reliably uses another cue. Keep supports that remain useful. Independence can include checking a list, setting an alert or asking for the instruction in writing.
When to look more widely
Working-memory difficulty can coexist with language, learning, hearing, sleep, anxiety and other health or developmental needs. A sudden change in memory, awareness or functioning needs medical advice. Persistent difficulty across home and school deserves discussion with teachers and the GP.
NICE says ADHD assessment should consider developmental history, functioning in different settings and other possible or coexisting conditions, and should not rely on a cognitive test or rating scale alone [1]. The wider guide to ADHD assessment and support explains that process.
The child does not need to prove that the instruction vanished. Put the next step where both of you can see it, then judge the support by what becomes easier to do.
