Why does my child misunderstand what people mean?

The short answer

A child can understand every word in a sentence and still miss the intended message. The meaning may depend on tone, context, a vague reference, sarcasm, an unwritten social rule or knowledge the speaker assumed was shared. Attention, language processing, working memory, sensory load and stress can make that extra inference harder. Other people can also misread the child's direct words, expression, silence or delayed response. Replace 'you know what I meant' with the meaning itself. Say who, what, where and when; distinguish a possibility from a plan; explain jokes without ridicule; and check by asking what the child thinks will happen next. After a social misunderstanding, reconstruct the event rather than teaching a rule too broad to be safe. If difficulties are frequent across settings or restrict learning, relationships, consent or safety, ask for an individual speech and language assessment.
